Leopard Trail Huts

The Leopard Trail is a three day hiking trail through the Baviaans Kloof World Heritage site.

NOH was commissioned by the East Cape Parks and Tourism Agency to act as Architects for the accommodation required at each of the three camps at which hikers sleep at the end of each days walk.

In speaking of the project, Tim Hewitt-ColeTim Hewitt-Coleman’s reflections on the design process for the Leopard Trail accommodation highlight the deep respect for the surrounding landscape and the thoughtful approach taken to create structures that harmonize with their environment. Here are some of his key points:

Design Philosophy:

  1. Respect for Landscape: Hewitt-Coleman emphasizes the need for the buildings to humble themselves before the magnificent natural features of the Baviaans Kloof. This approach prioritizes the landscape over architectural ambition, aiming to create a sense of delight through simplicity and integration.
  2. Functional Minimalism: The design constraints focus on providing only the essential utility, allowing users to feel as though they are camping rather than in a conventional building. This minimalist approach aligns with the experience of being in nature, fostering a connection to the outdoors.
  3. Construction Considerations: Acknowledging the remote nature of the sites, the project required a construction method that allowed for most work to be done offsite. This minimizes ecological impact and waste generation during on-site assembly, ensuring that the sensitive environment remains undisturbed.
  4. Simplicity in Design: Hewitt-Coleman aims to create structures that are accessible and understandable, inspiring users to think that they could replicate the designs themselves. This philosophy champions the idea of practicality and empowerment through architecture.
  5. Personal Satisfaction: The architect reflects on the emotional fulfillment derived from the project, suggesting that this feeling of satisfaction is a crucial measure of success, echoing the principles of the ancient architect Vitruvius, who emphasized beauty, utility, and durability.

Recognition

On November 2, 2023, the South African Institute of Architects recognized this project with a Regional Commendation for Architecture, celebrating its contribution to designing in sensitive environments like the Baviaans Kloof World Heritage Site. This award underscores the project’s commitment to sustainability, simplicity, and its positive impact on the environment. Hewitt-Coleman’s insights and the recognition of the project highlight the importance of thoughtful architecture that respects its surroundings, enhances user experience, and inspires future generations of builders and architects.

On receiving the award Tim said: “This award is an illustration of the growing realization that bigger is not always better and that the time is now to begin designing for a future that touches the environment lightly and draws less heavily on finite natural resources.”
