This campus library is part of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s upgrading master plan. The building is designed to foster a strong interaction between the built form and outdoor spaces, celebrating the civic nature of a library. In this regard, emphasis is placed on establishing a threshold between the building’s entrance and its approach, featuring a well-articulated courtyard as a linking element. The form and mass of the building have also been utilized to create a sense of presence and spatial hierarchy within the larger university master plan.
