The Node 2 Multipurpose Sports Centre is part of the Makana Township Regeneration Strategy, funded by the National Treasury as part of its NDPG program. The strategy identifies several nodes along a major transport corridor within the Makana Township of Grahamstown. The “Node 2” region is predominantly oriented towards sports and recreation. Among the urban upgrades, a proposal was made for a new Multipurpose Sports Centre to replace the existing underdeveloped centre for the community.
The new centre aims to establish itself as a hub for various activities, supporting sports, community functions, religious gatherings, and civic, public, and private events. By providing a variety of activities, the design encourages dynamic spaces that allow for flexible use. Key design principles guided every decision throughout the process: flexibility, durability, efficiency, legibility, and accessibility/security. The effective use of robust materials was prioritized to reduce maintenance and operational costs, while a sustainable design philosophy was integrated throughout the design process.
The Multipurpose Sports and Community Centre serves as a gathering place, a source of pride, and a facility belonging to the community. Its presence must instil a sense of progression, longevity, and pride.
