House at Kwa Rayi, Eastern Cape

Double-volume living space in the House at Kwa Rayi, Eastern Cape, with tall face-brick piers rising past clerestory windows

This house at Kwa Rayi in the Eastern Cape is one of noh’s early houses. Behind a quiet, white-plastered exterior under a tiled roof, the house opens up into a generous double-volume living space.

Tall face-brick piers rise through the volume, defining the living areas without closing them off, while clerestory windows set between them wash the brickwork with daylight from above. A cylindrical face-brick tower anchors one end of the house.

The photographs show the house as originally built. noh later returned to the project to design alterations and additions for the family.
